Sodom and Gomorrah destroyed by Everlasting Fire(Destruction)

Jude 7 "In the same manner, Sod′om and Go·mor′rah and the cities around them also gave themselves over to gross sexual immorality and pursued unnatural fleshly desires; they are placed before us as a warning example by undergoing the judicial punishment of everlasting fire."

If you're familiar with the story of Sodom and Gomorrah, You will recall how Jehovah destroyed it with sulfur and fire.

Genesis 19:24 "Then Jehovah made it rain sulfur and fire on Sod′om and Go·mor′rah—it came from Jehovah, from the heavens."

In Jude 7 we can see that this destruction was also referred to as everlasting fire. We also know that Sodom and Gomorrah hasn't literally been on fire since it was destroyed. The bible also gives no account of God planning on keeping the cities burning forever. He did however mention he was going to destroy it.

So we can be more confident in our claims that the everlasting fire that is the lake of fire, is not literal. Rather, it expresses the severity of the destruction of those sent there. Meaning they will be dead forever with no hope of being alive again.

2Peter 2:6 "And by reducing the cities of Sod′om and Go·mor′rah to ashes, he condemned them, setting a pattern for ungodly people of things to come."
